Air plant hammocks -- nickel #2
It’s been a terrible year for so many reasons, but a tiniest silver lining is that I’ve had way more time at home than ever (not a great time to be teaching community metalsmithing classes and making community art in schools). My plants, both inside and out, have had more consistent care than ever. Air plants are magical, but despite more time at home, for me it’s definitely out of sight, out of mind, so I needed a home for them, and one that could keep them safe from mischievous cats [insert your particular air plant menace here].
Made of repurposed nickel (also known as nickel silver or German silver) sheet metal from my teaching practice, air plant hammocks have been filed and sanded smooth, hammered and textured, formed/bent, and suspended from 3-4 strands of black cotton cord. Lightly polished and may oxidize naturally depending on atmospheric conditions of your home (water hardness, humidity, etc.)
Nickel is a very strong metal (also yep, it’s the alloy used to create nickels—and dimes and quarters for that matter). It’s the most common metal allergen, a reaction usually comes from sustained skin contact, (like wearing it). If you have extreme sensitivity to nickel, you could mitigate that by coating it in spray lacquer or clear nail polish :)
1.75” x 3”, cord length 10”
Cords are loosely knotted at the top so that you can adjust the length to suit your space. I’ve included the cord length with each description, but please make a note at checkout if you need an extra length of cord and I’m happy to provide it.
